Capo Vaticano

There were not remarkable historical events concerning Ricadi and the other villages gently scattered on a promontory at the foot of the plateau of Poro, between Briatico and Tropea, stretching over the sea. Its cape is called Capo Vaticano, a land that is more proper for the classical  heroes and gods than for the common people. However Ricadi had its  history. The numerous archeological remains that were brought to light by different exavations give witness to prehistory, Phoenicians carthaginians, Locri, Rome (obviously), Byzantines, Normans, Saracens who scouring  the coast sacked and set fire to all that they could not take away, angewins, Aragones, French and Bourbons. Maybe it was a low tone history and was mainly an economic history  given that  they needed to construct a port there from which there sailed the ships loaded with wine, oil and cereals. This happened in such a remote  age that they attributed the construction of the port to Hercules, the powerful demigod, who gave his name to it (Forum Herculis), today it’s called “Formicoli”) on his return from Spain with his herds that here founded plenty of pastures. Once the economy  of Ricadi and of its most important hamlets. St. Niccolò and St. Domenica was based on agriculture and stock-raising like that of the villages of the Poro, of which it is its cape. And though it has not given up its agricultural produces (olives, figs, grapes and above all the so called “Cipolla di Tropea” well-known all over the world characterized by a red bluish colour and particular nourishing and medical properties) it has overbearingly become an international destination for tourists thanks to its modern and properly equipped camp-sites, small villas hotels and refreshment-rooms that offer the best local food to local people and tourists longing for peaceful holidays in the middle  of a very beautiful nature, under a perpetual sun, a clean sea, small beaches with very fine  white and soft sand , black and shiny rocks, ornamental and fruit-trees, herbs and flowers in enamelled colours that give the impression of an eternal springs thanks to fact that they last for the whole year.
This Eden, just opposite  the Sicilian coasts and the Eolie Islands, that after  the sunset offer one of the most exiting sights in the world  thanks to their myriad-stars spangled sky. Giuseppe Berto decided to live her in lighthouse, where he wrote “il male oscuro” and where he decided to be buried, in St. Niccolò’s small churchyard.
