Founded in the 8th century BC., Locri is one of the most important places of interest for tourists to Calabria because of the Locri Epizephiri archaeological  area (3 km). It extends over a large area which has not yet been completely explored. Of particular interest are the cyclopic defence works, the remains of the Ionian Marasà and Athena Promachos temples and sanctuaries of Pan and Persephone. There are also considerable remains of the Greek-Roman theatre and necropolis and the collection of 37 bronze tables on display in the national Museum of  Reggio Calabria were found here. The  “ Cento camere” (hundred romms) area used to be the commercial district of ancient Locri. On the Pirretina hills there are the remains of another Greek-Roman theatre. The Scaglione family archaeological collection has exhibits of coins, terracotta votive plaques, sacramental objects and various epigraphic finds discovered during excavation.
