Castrovillari

Castrovillari is situated in a valley at the foot of the Pollino massif. The excellently preserved Aragonese castle  (from 1490) is located in the centre together with the town’s main church which is houses two 17th century  processional crosses and the church delle Pentite with a Madonna and Child by G. Marullo as well as the church of S. Giuliano with its 16th  century portal. The Pentite Conservatory (1635) and the Jewish Synagogue. Most impressive of all, however, is the Sanctuary of S. Maria del Castello  10th-11th century  overlooking the town on a rice. The façade has two Romanesque portals and a 15th century porch and houses a priceless 16th century fresco of the Madonna and Child, other paintings by Negroni and Vaccaro   and a 15th century copper plate from Nuremberg with a Gothic inscription. Also of importance are the  “della Trinità”  and S. Giuseppe medieval churches, the latter of which has a fine stone portal and contains a 17 century wooden crucifix. Close to the public library is a Museum containing finds of the Greek-Roman and pre-historic period, as well as a large collection of paintings by Andrea Alfano from Castrovillari. On the road to Spezzano Albanese one can see the ruins of a Roman Villa.
