Bagnara is one of the most interesting towns in the province of Reggio Calabria, both the tourism as for the Pretura of Bagnara. The Normans left an important trace as they built the well known Abbey that held jurisdiction over most of Calabria for a very long time. Even now the parish priest of Bagnara holds the title “Abbot”. The village is built on the steep sides of the Aspromonte. Above the constructions, the terracing where the famous “Zibibbo” grapes are cultivated, can be seen. In the centre the castle of Ruffo ( known as Emmarita) and the Caravilla bridge stand out for their interest. The town is crossed three times by the Rd. Statale 18. All that remains of the original Norman Abbey is a ruined column that is preserved in the new Abbey. Here there is also a painting of the Madonna and the twelve Apostles, that is very dear to the devotion of the people of Bagnara. In Bagnara there are artisans that blow glass, making beautiful objects and also many pastry-cooks who have created the famous “Torrone of Bagnara” ( a kind of nougat). There are also those who built the wood fishing boats that are also used for the fishing of the sword fish, that is common practice in this zone. North of Bagnara , near the sighting tower of Re Ruggero, a fishing and tourist port. Beyond that there is the cavern of the Rondini, that can be reached by boat. The Fractions of Ceramida and Pellegrina are in a very panoramic area. Here you can find the stalls that sell local pottery and the famous wheat bread of Bagnara. The other fraction is Solano; it has a monumental fountain on which the list of the tributes that travellers were obliged to pay to the Ruffo landlords if they wanted to travel on the Via Regia, is plainly visible. A typical dish of the town is the bagnarese sword-fish. It is possible to taste this speciality at the sword-fish festival in July. the town is also the seat of the Mia Martini (singer) arts and entertainment awards.
