Lungo, famous for its mine of rocks salt, was remember by Plinio, derived it name by “Ungarium” an ancient hamlet founded by Hungarians and Slaves, comuing in Calabria with Byzantin army.
This place were visit by byzantin and basilian monks and in XII century was build S. Maria de Fontibus Abbey thanks to lord from Bramalla ( now Altomonte) Ogerio di vasto and his wife Basila. When in XII century arrived arbreshe, that place was depopulate for continual war. Lungro is the spiritual capital of Albanese people in Italy.
