Morano Calabro

Morano is one of the most characteristic towns of Calabria. It is a rare example of “Architettura a cascata” (Waterfall architecture) that consists of a cone shaped hill, completely covered by the escalation of roofs belonging to the buildings that rise over tightly knit steps. The origins of the town go back to the ancient Sibari Magnogreca. The first evidence of its existence is connected to the “Lapide di Polla” (132 b.C.) that was a signal post of the military road, marking the town as one of the stations of the consular road Popilia that connected Capua to Reggio Calabria.  Later references are hard to come by. It is possible that some point the town was controlled by the Byzantines and with te Muslim invasions of the 9th and 10th centuries by the Saracens.  However  the presence of the Normans is certified, as they built the first nucleus of the castle who’s ruins still tower over the town today. It is believed that the name of the town comes from “Moranum” which is it’s original Latin “Morus” means “rich in mulberries”. Morano became a property of the Sanseverino princes of Bisignano in 1614. Following that it  become governed by the state until the union of Italy. Today it is a small centre in the hill who’s survival is based on agriculture and artisan work. It is also the starting point for the excursions on the Mount Pollino.
To be seen:
Archaeological zone. Found a few km’s from the town, along the provincial rd. that leads to the nearby village of San Basile. The archaeological zone is of Albanian origins and within it are the remains of the mysterious city of Sassonia and natural prehistoric cavern of the Neolithic age.
-The caves of San  Paolo, found in the proximity of the zone known as terra rossa. Natural caves, 440 m. s.l.m. 245 m long and not entirely explored. Guided tours are suggested in this location.
Museums:
-The Museum of the history of agriculture and sheep-farming in the elementary school is full of farming utensils of different  types and times
